By now, it's widely known that much of beauty innovation starts in Korea. As I've written about before here, many Western brands have started to take note of new and popular products developed by Korean beauty brands and then bring them to the US Market. BB Creams, CC Creams, cushion compacts, and sheet masks were all beauty hits in Korea before making their way in a meaningful way to the West.
The latest example is Benefit Cosmetics they're real! double the lip lipsticks. This lipstick leverages the innovation of the hit Laneige Two Tone Lip Bars with a slight adaption (a pointy tip that acts as a lip liner).
The ombre/gradient lip look has been very popular in Korea and in the US and while many women were using two separate lipsticks and blending to create the look, Laneige decided to combine two colors in one for an easier, multi-functional product.
When launched in early 2015, these Two Tone Lip Bars were an immediate hit with stores sold out for months. The interesting rectangular format, the 2-in-1 colors, and sleek packaging made this a must-have item for Seoulite women. Since the launch, they've iterated and come out with a Two Tone Tint Lip Bar and holiday editions.
I wasn't surprised that a Western beauty brand had come out with their own version. Their twist is interesting since the lip liner aspect makes it less a product to create an ombre/gradient look. Perhaps this trend wasn't as popular Stateside so they decided to focus more on a lip liner + lipstick in one.
Regardless, it's another example of a Western brand taking a page out of a K-Beauty brand's innovation. What will be next?
